A Whirlwind Wedding by Scarlett Chapter 11

Chapter 11 What A Joke

Ruthanne turned around and lifted her gaze. She saw Theodoric, dressed in a loose black robe, looking down at her like a high and mighty king. “Is there anything else?” Theodoric narrowed his eyes and uttered bluntly, “I don’t know what method you used to make yourself become my wife, but I hope you realize that a woman of your status can never dream of convincing me to regard you with a higher opinion. Therefore, three months from today, I hope you will show up at the City Hall on time.” Ruthanne was taken aback. A woman of my status? What status? Do I need him to regard me with a higher opinion? He’s not a god, so what he thinks of me wouldn’t benefit me in any way. She couldn’t stand Theodoric’s detestable and condescending demeanor. Compared with him, we are indeed two people from different worlds. However, despite my humble origin, I am not lowly. Therefore, she straightened her back and replied unabashedly, “Mr. Lasker, I think neither of us wants anything to do with each other. Goodbye.” With that, she strode off, leaving Theodoric with the sight of her skinny yet aloof retreating figure. Her disdain caused him to grimace and feel irritated once again. Why is she pretending to be all high and mighty? She spouted those big talks but still sneaked into my room last night. What a hypocritical woman. After leaving Truson Manor, Ruthanne walked for a few miles before finding a bus stop. She had completed the task assigned by the mysterious person, and her immediate concern was to go to the hospital to see if her grandmother had started treatment. When she arrived at Jadeborough Hospital and stepped into the ward, she saw a nurse exiting with a small metal tray. The nurse locked eyes with Ruthanne and asked, “Are you Eve Lindt’s family member?” Ruthanne nodded. “Yes.” “Her condition is severe, and she had missed the golden treatment period, so she’s still in a coma. The subsequent therapy will take a long time, so you better brace yourself.” Colors drained from Ruthanne’s face as she uttered tentatively, “About the money—” “You don’t have to worry about the expenses. Someone has already taken care of the payment.” The mysterious person kept their promise. The heavy weight on Ruthanne’s heart was finally lifted. Still, who is this mysterious person? Why are they helping me foot Grandma’s medical bill by requesting me to get married? No matter how she racked her brain, Ruthanne couldn’t figure out the reason. “Miss, do you know who paid for the expenses?” The nurse shook her head. “I’m not sure, nor do I have the right to ask.” Ruthanne thought. Fine. The mysterious person is so enigmatic. Even I don’t know who he or she is, so why would they let others know of their plans? I’ll just wait for them to contact me. Subsequently, Ruthanne didn’t converse with the nurse further and turned around to enter the ward. She sat on Eve’s bedside and massaged the latter’s limbs. Eve’s condition was deteriorating day by day, and since she couldn’t move her hands and legs, her muscles would experience atrophy. Ruthanne busied herself with caring for Eve until she was covered in sweat when a shrill and sarcastic voice suddenly sounded outside. “Ruthanne, you’re really here!” Ruthanne turned around and saw that it was Marianne. She averted her gaze, deciding to ignore Marianne, and continued to massage Eve. Marianne was in no hurry either. After all, she had successfully hooked up with the accomplished and wealthy Theodoric and was about to rise to the top of the social ladder. Feeling extremely pleased and smug, Marianna couldn’t wait to show off to Ruthanne. “Do you despise me that much?” Marianne stepped into the room in high heels, and the clicking sound was especially annoying. “On second thought, that’s only right. After all, Mom and Dad showered me with all their love, so you must be very upset, right? Still, you can’t blame anyone for this. You can only blame yourself for being a jinx. This is your retribution for causing the bankruptcy of our family’s casino!” Ruthanne paused and shifted her gaze upward to look at Marianne frostily. “Are you done? If so, you can leave now.” Marianne leaned forward to look at Ruthanne’s masked countenance and behaved even more cockily. “That mask really suits you. A lowly woman like you doesn’t deserve to have a face as beautiful as mine. B*tch!” Ruthanne trembled with rage. She stood up and looked down at Marianne. “What exactly do you want?” Though they were twins and looked alike, there were still subtle differences between them. Ruthanne was slightly taller, and her eyes were bigger and more captivating. When their parents brought Marianne to the countryside to meet with Eve in the past, many villagers praised Ruthanne for being more beautiful than Marianne. Since then, Marianne had been jealous of Ruthanne, wanting to compete with the latter in whatever they did. “What do I want? As your biological elder sister, of course, I’m here to share my good news with you.” Marianne wore a triumphant expression. “I’m getting married.” Ruthanne was unfazed and merely hummed indifferently in response while continuing to massage her grandmother. She’s getting married? Ha! Only a blind man would marry her. “Ruthanne, let me tell you. My luck is about to change. I’m going to marry into a wealthy family and be the rich lady of a prominent household, enjoying a lifetime of riches and glory. The gap between us will only widen further as you continue to live like a beggar in the slums!” Ruthanne snorted. “What are you laughing at?” Taking in Ruthanne’s sneer, Marianne was instantly stunned. She’s not reacting in the same way I imagined she would. “My ears are not playing tricks on me, right? Did you say you’re going to marry into a wealthy family?” Marianne held her chin up high. “That’s right.” Ruthanne sized up Marianne’s outfit. “Are you sure the other party is willing to marry you?” “What do you mean by that?” Ruthanne chuckled. “If he’s truly willing to marry you, why would he allow you to dress in those cheap clothing?” Even though Ruthanne had never brushed shoulders with elites from prestigious families, she imagined that the rich should dress like Theodoric. She could tell at first glance that the black robe he wore that morning was clearly of high value. Hold on. I loathe that man, so why am I thinking about him now? Have I lost my mind? Ruthanne shook her head. Meanwhile, Marianne, standing behind Ruthanne, was fuming after hearing the latter’s remark. She raised her voice and uttered spitefully, “I’m dressed like this because of you! If it weren’t for you jinxing our family to its demise, would we be so poor to the extent of not being able to afford branded clothing? Ruthanne, I’m not afraid to tell you this. Thanks to you, my fiancé is not only affluent but also powerful!” Thanks to me? Ruthanne was momentarily dazed before turning around to gaze at Marianne in bewilderment. At long last, Marianne was able to see a trace of astonishment on Ruthanne’s countenance. She approached the latter on her heels and laughed triumphantly. “Aren’t you curious about who I’m going to marry?”
